What Did the Fox Say?

Posted 1:01pm, Friday 12 October 2018

We may have been around for 50 years but we’re just getting started. 2018 has been one massive year for the club and 2019 is looking even bigger and better!

So here’s a recap of the year:

Nathan Williams was nominated and accepted the position of Club President.

After celebrating our 50th Anniversary in 2017 we thought it was time to freshen things up and 2018 saw the introduction of a new club logo incorporating a fox as well as new playing kits for both senior and junior teams. A massive thankyou to Russell Geddes for all of his work on the design of the new logo and kits.

Where did the fox come from? Well come on down to the fields on any Friday night when our Over 35 teams play and you’ll see “Basil Brush” and a number of his furry friends running around on the bottom fields throughout the night. You may even see one or two of them in Club Stalwart - Glen Watson’s chicken coop!

Vaux Radio commenced with game broadcasts and Podcasts of interviews with players, coaches and committee members.

The club installed a couple of new grandstands on the top field after successfully receiving funding via a State Government grant. Thanks to Gavin (Macca) McMenemy who provided his services free of charge to install the grandstands.

The club has also applied for further funding via another grant to returf the top field and we will find out if we have been successful with our application in December. Did you know the cost to returf one field is anywhere between $125,000.00 - $190,000.00 depending on the quality of turf used - that’s an awful lot of fundraising?

In 2018 our Football Brisbane Capital teams were moved up from Capital 3 to the Capital 2 Division.

The club signed up a new coaching and management team headed up by Russell and Graham Mapri who brought a new coaching and training philosophy to the club. In addition they were able to sign up a wealth of new talent as well as promoting players within the club resulting in both the Capital 2 and Capital 2 Reserve teams finishing 3rd and 4th on the table respectively which was a massive inprovement on previous years results.

A big congratulations to Capital 2 player Kev Barraclough on winning the Football Brisbane Golden Boot Award for leading goal scorer in Capital 2. 19 goals (despite a few games out injured) - A truly amazing season by Kevin.

2019 is looking even brighter for the club with the signing of Flight Centre Premier League Centre Back, Marvin Brattan. Marvin comes to the club with a wealth of footballing knowledge and experience having played for Holland Park Hawks for a number of years. He is a huge inclusion to the club and one that the whole club is very excited about.

2018 also saw the addition of a 4th Over 35 team competing in the QMF competition so we now have 80 players at our club competing in the Over 35 competition. 3 of our 4 Over 35 teams were successful in reaching the finals play offs this season with our Div 6 team going on to win the Grand Final continuing our proud history in this competition.

2019 is likely to see the introduction of an Over 45 team or two and we would love to see an uptake of women looking to play in our Over 30’s legend’s team.

We were also delighted to see each of our age group teams (U12 – U16) reaching their respective finals play offs this season especially our U16 team under the guidance of Tommy Bishop as this was their first season together at our club.

Our junior playing base continues to grow each year with the club fielding teams in every age group and it was particularly great to see more female players at the club this year – we would still love to see a lot more junior and senior female players at the club.

The club will also be looking at entering teams in the U18 and U20 divisions next season.

The club continues to run our “Squirts” program provided free of charge designed for children aged 3 – 5 years and will continue to do so in 2019. This has been one of the success stories of the club with many of these budding “Socceroos” and “Matildas” now playing in our U6 and U7 teams.

We would like to thank all the coaches and managers, mums and dads, uncles and aunties, brothers and sisters and volunteers who give up so much of their time throughout the year to help us run the club. A special thanks to all those coaches who have continued on throughout the years – your contribution to the success of our club does not go unnoticed or unappreciated.

We would also like to thank the following club sponsors whose financial support of the club is greatly appreciated:

Spot Productions, Click Village Lighting, Devchem, Raptis, Southside Toyota and Mad Mex Garden City

We would also like to thank our club cinematographer – Lance Huxley whose tireless efforts filming senior fixtures brings much merriment to everyone at the senior presentation night and big Kev from Vaux Radio whose podcasts and match broadcasts throughout the season have been fantastic.

Thankyou to everyone for your contribution both on and off the field and we look forward to the season ahead.

Hope to see you all and some new faces back in 2019!
